Sometimes I would spend half an hour until an hour plus just to wait for my hawker food to be served on my table. Is it worth the time waiting? Well, as Penangites, somehow we have the in-built food detector in us. We can sense that whenever there is a large queue in any of the hawker stalls or restaurants, the food served there must be real good. We would willingly and patiently wait for our turns.

One such stall which I visited recently was the famous Taman Berkeley Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih stall. The Mee Hoon Kuih was actually another version of Pan Mee. The dough (Mee Hoon) came as a ball. Before cooking, it would be flattened using both hands (instead of rolling through a mini machine as in Pan Mee) and then peeled into a pot of boiling water to cook. The cooked dough would then be mixed into a pot of soup stock with slices of pork and Chinese cabbage (choy sum). It would then be garnished with fried anchovies (ikan bilis) and fried onions.

This shop has been getting a lot of publicity from overseas as well as local food reviewers such as Ho Chak! You can see lots of advertisements and write-ups from various magazines stuck on the walls. To know how good it is as advertised, you have to try it out yourself. To some, this dish is good. To others, it’s only normal and nothing spectacular. The only difference is that they will allow you to add in fried lard to enhance the taste.

What the pricing then? Did all the publicity affect their pricing? Well, no. I ordered the bowl shown above and paid only RM3.50. It was RM3.00 for the normal bowl of noodle plus an additional 50sen for the egg. Not expensive right? Here is the latest price list as displayed on their wall. They can even pack for you the dough and ingredients separately to allow you to cook at home. Don’t you think this is a wonderful service as you can cook the dish and eat whenever you feel like it? Everything will cost you only RM3.00 a set.

If you are driving from Klang towards Bandar Baru Klang, drive into Jalan Batu Tiga, then Persiaran Sultan Ibrahim. Use the Federal Highway and turn left into Persiaran Rajawali. Drive on until you reach the fourth junction on your right. That is Lebuh Bangau. After two junctions, you will see the fully packed restaurant somewhere towards the end of a row of shoplots.

Roti Canai, a kind of flatbread has become part of the Malaysian meal, whether it is for breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner or supper. The ingredients for the local delicacy consist of plain wheat flour, ghee, egg, salt, sugar and warm water/milk. Everything would be kneaded thoroughly, folded repeatedly and left to proof and rise. The ready dough would then be made into dough balls and coated with butter/oil. Each ball would then be flung until a thin layer is obtained. It would then be folded and cooked on an iron skillet with oil, butter or ghee. The best Roti Canai would be soft and fluffy on the inside while the outside would be flaky and crispy. Normally it would be served with dhal (beans, carrot, and potatoes cooked with coconut milk and spices) or fish curry.

There are also many variations on how a Roti Canai can be served:
Roti Tisu – The paper thin dough is fried without being folded and served plain or sprinkled with condensed milk
Roti Telur – The dough is filled with an egg.
Roti Bawang – The dough is filled with chopped onions.
Roti Planta – The dough is filled with butter and/or sugar.
Roti Bom – The dough is filled with butter and condensed milk.
Roti Telur Bawang – The dough is filled with an egg and chopped onions.
Roti Kaya – The dough is filled with coconut milk egg jam.
Roti Tuna – The dough is filled with tuna with mayonnaise.
Roti Sardin – The dough is filled with sardine in tomato.
Roti Keju – The dough is filled with grated cheese.
Roti Milo – The dough is filled with sprinkled Milo powder.
Roti Tampal – The dough is folded and fried and wrapped with a fried egg
Murtabak Ayam/Daging – The dough is filled with a cooked combination of a beaten egg mixed with chunks of chicken/mutton, spices and soy sauce. The end product will normally be served with pickled rose syrup onions.

I was down in Port Klang (Pelabuhan Klang) recently and was amazed to find a restaurant having endless stream of consumers (85% Chinese) going for their Roti Canai. The business was so good that you can see SIX workers making the Roti Canai simultaneously. You heard me right… SIX WORKERS! The service there was superb and the Roti Canai was one of the best I have taken so far, crispy and flaky than most of the restaurants I have tried before. Their curry gravy was thick and pungent.

On top of the Roti Canai, they have good fried noodles, nasi lemak (steamed rice with coconut milk served with egg and spicy anchovies) and a wide range of Northern India style of curries to be taken with rice. If you are around that area, you should try them out.

The restaurant is between Taman Chi Leong and Bandar Bukit Tinggi (Malaysia’s largest Jaya Jusco is here) within Kawasan 10 of the Port Klang area. If you are not sure, you can ask for directions to Pandamaran Jaya area. If you do not have a GPS, you may have a problem with the road listing as it is quite messy there. Jalan Pandamaran Jaya 62 is actually between Jalan Pandamaran Jaya 18 and Jalan Pandamaran Jaya 99. See what I mean? But it definitely did not stop me from finding the shop. LOL!

BAKERI ROTI RAYA

This bakery used to be owned by Sunflower Homemade Cakes which was one of the best known Indonesian Layer Cake makers in Malaysia but somehow I am still clueless on the reasons they moved their business elsewhere. However, I think one of the bakers still remained in the bakery as the layout and food taste had not changed too much. I still visit this place each time I’m around that area and buy back some of their yummy cheese tarts.

There are four different choices such as the Blueberry, Strawberry, Black Forrest and Chocolate Cheese Tarts. I will usually go for their Blueberry and Strawberry Cheese Tarts as I find them more suitable for my taste buds. I used to buy the tarts at RM2.20 each but I guessed with the increase price of the ingredients, they are selling at RM2.90 each now. I tend to like to cake the tarts chilled as I felt that I can truly enjoy the cheesy taste of the tarts.

PETALING STREET (CHINATOWN) YUMMY CURRY CHICKEN BREAD

I always thought that I could get the famous Curry Chicken Bread only in Kampar, Perak but I was wrong. As I was moving through the busy streets of Jalan Petling into Jalan Hang Lekir, I came across a stall selling this type of bread right in front of the Tang City Food Court. It was called the Yummy Curry Chicken Bread and was selling at RM12 each.

Since I was on my way back to Penang, I decided to get hold of one. To my surprise when I cut open the bread (quite similar to our Bengali Bread), there was this aluminum bowl filled with curry chicken to the brim with a layer of plastic wrap on top to avoid the gravy from spilling out. What a great way to maintain the gravy and at the same time avoid the bread from being soggy.

There were all together 6 choice pieces of chicken meat in the bread and the thick curry gravy was cooked in Indian style with lots of curry leaves. This new discovery was indeed appetizing. The chicken meat was tender and the spiciness of the curry was just right. One loaf of this dish would be enough to feed two to three person as the bread can be rather filling.

Finding the stall would not be hard. Walk into Petaling Street, Chinatown’s main entrance from Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (opposite Kota Raya) and you will reach a crossed junction. Hong Leong Bank is at the corner on your left. Turn left into the road (Jalan Hang Lekir) and you will the stall just in front of the Tang City Food Court on your left.

HOU MEI NOODLE HOUSE

Before the Dreamz show started, we had decided to go for some food to fill up our tummies since we had skipped our lunches due to the rushing to catch a bus up Genting Highlands. After moving around the dining area in search of food, we tried out the latest in contemporary Asian cuisine, the Hou Mei Noodle House. At least that was where we could savor a unique fusion of Western and Asian Cuisine all in one place.

Since I can’t live without curry, I ordered the Curry Hor Fun Noodles (RM14.95). The dish came in a large bowl with 3 chunky pieces of chicken meat, 2 prawns, 5 half pieces of soy bean cakes (tau hoo pok) and some long beans. I would think it is a bit pricey but what else would I expect as I was in Genting. Of course food would be more expensive there. The soup base was spicy with a mild taste of lemongrass but it was not as spicy as I would like it to be although I did add lots of chili paste which was not hot enough. Moreover, I needed to add in some soy sauce to boost up the salty taste in it. Passable but not as tasty as those I can get from Penang.

On the other hand, my friend decided to order the much recommended Hawaiian Chicken Chop (RM21.30). They have an average size of grilled chicken meat, topped with some sweet and sour gravy, a piece of canned pineapple and some vegetables. The portion and taste was fine but for me I would love to have some salad cream to go with my vegetables.

Overall, the restaurant has the ambience to make one feel relax. We paid a total of RM44.85 for the meals, inclusive a plastic cup of cold Chinese tea (RM2.30) and sprite float (RM6.30). All prices have 5% Government tax and 10% service tax added in. Hou Mei Noodles House is just next to the entrance of the Starworld Casino within the First World Hotel premises.

COUNTRY’S TID-BITS & CANDIES COTTAGE

Arghhh… I have been hooked on those colorful pebbles for days. I just can’t stop myself from munching these colored stones ever since I attended AMBP’s VIP invitations to the Genting’s Exclusive Dreamz Magic Show on Sunday. My friend said that I have gone nutty. Have I?

Haha! Don’t get me wrong. I am still as sober as always. It’s just that I love the taste of the rocky version of M&M. Of course, M&M does not produce this. I got those yummy chocolates from COUNTRY’S TID-BITS & CANDIES COTTAGE at Genting Skyway Complex. This is so far the largest tid-bits shop I have ever been to where I can try out everything without worrying whether I have to pay for them.

The shop will allow you to try out whatever preserved fruits, vegetables, nuts, cookies, sweets, jelly beans, biscuits, crackers, etc that you would love to buy. Just fill in the available plastic bags or containers, weigh them at the counter and pay for the amount. It’s so simple. Can you imagine going into a shop and seeing mounts of your favorite munchies at every corner of the shop?

Now you can say that I am a bit crazy when it comes to sweet and sour munchies. I could not even believe that I brought almost RM90 worth of tid-bits at one go. Hey! I am not pregnant ok? LOL! Some of the recommended tid-bits that I felt rather good include the colored pebbles, red skin salted peanuts, ginger in cubes and the sweetened cuttlefish. Maybe you have different taste bud but no worries as you have around 100 varieties to choose from. Here are some of the munchies that I had brought:
